Rara Lake is Nepal's largest lake and one of the most remote and pristine natural wonders in the Himalayas. Sitting at 2,990m in the Mugu district of Karnali Province, the lake is a jewel of stunning blue water surrounded by conifer forests, snow-capped peaks, and the total silence of the remote northwest. The Rara National Park, Nepal's smallest national park at just 106 sq km, protects this extraordinary ecosystem along with rare wildlife like musk deer, red pandas, and over 200 bird species. Trekking to Rara is a journey into true wilderness — far from the tourist crowds of the Annapurna or Everest regions. The reward is complete solitude on the shores of a lake so clear you can see its floor, with sunsets that paint both the water and the mountains in gold.
Trek through remote Karnali landscapes to reach the lake — the Rara Lake Trek typically takes 8–10 days.
Over 200 bird species inhabit the area, including the bar-headed goose, griffon vulture, and snow partridge.
Row across the mirror-like surface of Rara Lake for extraordinary views of the surrounding mountains.
Camp on the lakeshore under a sky full of stars, completely untouched by light pollution.
Capture the extraordinary light on the lake at sunrise and sunset, and the pristine wilderness all around.
Look out for Himalayan black bears, red pandas, musk deer, and snow leopards in the national park.

May to June and September to November are the best times. May offers clear skies before monsoon, while autumn (September–November) provides stable weather and stunning colours. Winters bring heavy snowfall that closes the area.
