Lumbini is one of the most sacred places on Earth — the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. Located in the flat Terai plains of southern Nepal, the UNESCO World Heritage site attracts pilgrims and travellers from all corners of the globe. The sacred garden complex contains the Maya Devi Temple built over the exact spot of Buddha's birth in 623 BC, the Ashoka Pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC, and an ancient bathing pond. Surrounding the sacred garden is a beautifully planned 'monastic zone' where dozens of countries have built magnificent Buddhist monasteries and temples in their own architectural styles — from the gilded spires of Myanmar to the minimalist white forms of Korean Zen. Lumbini is a place for quiet contemplation, meditation, and reflection.
